A Bridge to Keep You in Suspense

An Underside view of the New River Gorge Bridge

Opened in 1977, this bridge was built with the purpose of reducing a 40 minute drive through West Virginia’s hilly mountainous regions down to but a single minute of driving across a bridge. Originally the longest suspension bridge in the world, it now sits at the number 4th place in length. In 2006 it was chosen to represent the state on the back of the commemorative quarters that were being released by the US Mint, as this was a symbol of American creativity and perseverance to solve problems.
