The Toledo Cincinnati Express

Going southbound 75 headed towards Cincinnati, one will notice a section of the highway with walls extending over ten feet tall rising from both sides. Many do not know that the Erie-Miami canal ran through that stretch of highway 150 years ago. In 1825 construction started on the canal in Middletown Ohio. This Canal spanned 274 miles spanning the length of Ohio (from Toledo to Cincinnati). After construction was completed in 1845, the canal received short-lived praise because of the soon boom of the railroad industry. Many of the canal has been replaced today, except for limited locations. For more information about the Erie- Miami canal visit https://ohiohistorycentral.org/w/Miami_and_Erie_Canal.
