1922 Industrial Survey of Door

"Door is a sort of sub-chief, and sets a very good example to his people. He is usually at work. Could keep his farm in better condition but he does very well considering he is farming right on the very ground where the battle of the Sioux took place only 46 years ago, and the Crows were in their native condition. He was working in his garden when I visited him. He recently built an addition to his house, giving as a reason for using certain funds that his children were attending public school and that he had to keep them at home. He had to have more room so that they could keep cleaner, and keep their clothes in better order, and live better than they could in a little house. This was a very legitimate reason, and he was encouraged to build a house which we found very well furnished and very well kept. I asked him was he thought of running a school wagon for their neighborhood next year to a graded school. He said that suited him all right because he wanted his children in as good a school as they could attend and he thought that would be better for them than a small district school."
