1922 Industrial Survey of Good Horse

"This man has a very good tract of land immediately under the ditch, convenient to irrigate, laying well for growing almost any crop. It is nearer to market than some, making it more profitable for raising grain than more remote land. He built a good house last year. I found him camped down near the river 10 or 12 miles from his home. He had been on his place, put up his hay and fixed up his fences and just recently moved down to this winter camp. I asked him why he left his fine new house. He said that they were turning the water out of the ditch and that they had no water nearer than the river or a spring 2 miles away. He has cultivated hay only and this was a very good crop for him, generally, when there is a hay market. He really should raise enough garden and wheat for his own food. He assures me that if he had a well, he would live at his house and stay there through the winter, although I do not blame him much for wanting to camp down near the river among the trees through the winter, rather than upon his land which is entirely unprotected and where the wind has full sweep. I have just authorized a loan to provide him with a well and hope that we will get him to stay there at least a longer part of the year next year. He has worked on his place very well in putting up his hay and the fact that he wanted to use practically all of his bank account in building a house, indicates that he has the ambition to have a better home."
