1922 Industrial Survey of Hartford Comes From Above

"Hartford received his Patent in Fee some 3 years ago. He borrowed money and bought cattle, which appeared to be a very good business deal at the time. He confronted an expensive winter and failed to make proper provision for his cattle and lost some of them. Others have been eaten up and stolen. At present, he reports none. He has the only good stone house I know of on the reservation. It has 2 rooms, good size, and is very substantially built. however, he hardly ever lives at his own place. He makes no use of any part except that which is in hay or pasture. It could easily be made to produce twice the amount. He irrigates occasionally and puts up the hay. Most of the time he lives with his father-in-law in another district and helps him with his limited farming. He prefers hunting deer and bear in the high mountains to hunting potato bugs in the garden."
