1922 Industrial Survey of James Carpenter

"James Carpenter is a member of the Business Committee is one of the active councilors and advisors of the tribe. His house is very poor and very poorly kept. It is true he has a large family and relatives often stay with him, making it hard to keep the place as it might be kept if they were alone. He has had a great many implements. He has had no shelter for them and they have been neglected, as indicated by the remnants that are scattered about the place. He makes in good years some 300 ton of hay and had a crew putting up hay when we visited him. He was in the field mowing. He has what could be a very fair farm, mostly on the allotments of members of his family. He has a Patent in Fee to his own allotment, which has been mortgaged, if not actually sold. He seems to be using it this year. When I visited the place, the grasshoppers were invading his late grain the worst I have seen anywhere on the Reservation. The following day we secured poison and he applied it at once and reported very satisfactory results. James formerly raised considerable wheat and hay and usually had a good automobile about once a year, but it seems that he has no automobile now and he may have found that it necessary to use his funds for other purposes. he is working much better this year than he did last."
