"This man says that he is not able to do farm work himself. I found him all packed up just ready to go to the Big Horn Valley to attend the Fourth of July celebration for about a week. His alfalfa was ready to cut, his grain would need irrigating in a short time. His garden needed attention. It was my opinion that it would not be any more of a physical hardship to drive a mowing machine, than it would be to drive a spring wagon over a mountain road, 60 or 80 miles. He hires a Cree Indian to do all of his work on shares. I could not learn that he did anything himself. Both he and his father-in-law are able to do most of the work about the garden and at least to have the supervision of the other farm work, and to help a good deal with it. The house is indifferently kept with very little furniture. The only promising remedy for such cases as this, is for them to confront hunger because of their indolence. If this remedy will not cure them, there is little reason why they should survive."
