1922 Industrial Survey of Bear Claw

"Bear Claw himself lives in Lodgegrass, where he owns a fair cottage. He has not been able to work his land himself for some time. It has been rented out on a crop rental basis, under his general direction. He is an exception among the Indians in that he has had for a long time a rather comfortable bank account, free from supervision, and appears to use his money rather carefully. His wife was evidently also frugal, as they had a rather comfortable balance in the bank at the time of her sickness and death, a few months ago. They also own some good property in the town of Lodgegrass where they live. Bear Claw's health has been poor for some months and he cannot do very much. He is one of the Indian Judges and it is to be hoped that his land may be so leased that it will yield him a living."
