1922 Industrial Survey of Pretty Coyote

"When I called at this house in the middle part of the day in the middle part of the summer, I found Pretty Coyote and his stepson, who lives with him, sitting in the house. Pretty Coyote made no pretense of working. He said he had his crops raised by a renter, he had a garden put in by a renter who gave him part of the crop. He said he didn't work, that he liked to run horse races and play some Indian gambling games. He said he had played them so much that he was very skillful and nearly always won. He has some good horses and a very good place. He has considerable more land than he claims to farm himself, as he has his own allotment and some inherited interests that were partitioned recently, forming a very valuable group and well located. I suppose to be able to make a living from our property without work ourselves, is a common ambition, and if Pretty Coyote can do this, he should probably be envied, rather than criticized."
