1922 Industrial Survey of Bird Hat

"He and his son, Sampson, work together as one firm, Sampson doing most of the work. Bird Hat claims that he is not able to work since he had the Flu, a few years ago. However, he can ride in a spring wagon in the hot sun, over rough roads, many miles to attend the Fourth of July celebration. They had someone cutting his alfalfa, putting it up on shares, probably giving them about 1/2 of the hay for putting it up while they celebrate. The boy is reputed to be a fairly industrious young man and it would be much better for him to live alone and manage his own business, than to work under the direction of his father, who is not very much disposed to work. Their house is fair well furnished and moderately well kept. Bird Hat appears to be a Chief, and it may be that this responsibility is about all that he can endure without taking on such responsibility as raising potatoes."
