"Whiteman Runs Him is an old time Indian. He was one of the scouts with the 7th cavalry at the time of the battle of the Little Big Horn. When there is some dress parade among the Indians, he is fixed up in his Indian garb and might be taken for the remnant of the real savage. His house is better kept than most of the young women’s houses. He showed me with considerable pride that he had put the wall board on himself, that he had done certain of the building, he had made the chimney himself. He has pictures on the walls, very good furniture, rugs, and withall, a very respectable little home. I consider him about the best stockman on the Reservation. He has some 40 or 50 cattle. He knows where they all are everyday. He looks after branding them. He rides the range and keeps them in proper limits. When there is beef to sell, he takes it to the shipping point and he knows exactly wat returns he should get. His example could be followed to a very good advantage by many of the younger men and a lot of the women from non-reservation schools could learn considerable from his wife, who does not know a word of English, about housekeeping."
