A Busy Beach

Though native people lived in the area for thousands of years, the recorded history of this beach begins with the arrival of Spanish explorers in the 16th century. In 1559, Don Tristan de Luna y Arellano led the first settlement of the region. A hurricane decimated the colony a few weeks later, killing hundreds and sinking 5 ships and they left soon after. The Spanish build a presidio on the beaches of Pensacola in 1722 but hurricanes in 1741 and 1752 forced its relocation to the mainland. Today, Pensacola is home to one of the best white-sand beaches in the country. It’s time for vacation!
