Confederate Dead

Statue of a Confederate soldier among the graves of 532 confederate troops in Perryville, Kentucky

October 8th, 1862. Union and Confederate forces clashed in the biggest battle Kentucky will ever see. 532 Confederate troops died here. This statue commemorates their death. Southern Troops won a decisive battle here. Lincoln said “I think to lose Kentucky is nearly the same as to lose the whole game.” Orville Browning, “Collected works of Abraham Lincoln”(Volume 4)

The confederates were outnumbered and were forced to leave the town soon after the battle. They left all their dead lying on the battlefield. Local farmer Henry Bottom and his slaves were tasked with burying the dead where this marker stands. This must have been a horrible task.
