Land of the Bellevue House

Bellevue park today is a favorite hangout spot for UC students and locals. The park opened in 1955, however, from 1876-1893, the land held the Bellevue House, a massive resort allowing the working families a reprieve from the grimy urban setting. Bellevue had it all: a pool table, clothing stores, food, and a bar.

The resort, while popular, quickly ran into financial trouble. During this period of time strict laws prohibited the sale of alcohol on Sundays. The only day workers had off; leaving the houses most popular day, the same day they may be raided by the police (Brewing Heritage Trail Tour, “Built on Beer” Tour Script, 2022).
