A Lowcountry Treasure

Angel Oak

Found on John Island in Charleston, South Carolina, stands the Angel Oak or locally referred to as “A Lowcountry Treasure.” Estimating to be 400-500 years old this great tree reaches 65 feet high and 25.5 feet around. It shades an area of 17,000 square feet. It’s name derives from the Angel Estate owned by Justus Angel and Martha Waight Angel. But locals might argue that it’s name comes from a legend. It has been said that ghosts of former enslaved people appear as angels surrounding the tree.
