The Abandoned Railroad Bridge

A rusted metal train bridge with metal piping on the side all suspended by stone pillars. The ground in front of the bridge is covered in gravel and there is a small calico cat walking in front.

This historic railroad bridge was built in Franklin, Ohio in the middle of the 19th century as the railroad expanded into the city. It stretches over the Miami Valley River and was once a major part of the city’s economic system by facilitating trade imports and exports. This bridge is also a significant marker of the 1913 flood that devastated Franklin’s downtown, as the water levels reached all the way up to the bridge. This is a unique piece of hidden history in Franklin, it helped shape our city but most people are unaware of its existence.
