The Bearcat is Born

The bearcat statue found at the end of Glen Park way, outside the African American Studies building on the University of Cincinnati campus, was created in 2010.  It commemorates the football game in 1917 where the UC mascot was “chosen”.  The statue itself is fierce and snarling, and several times the size of its wild counterpart.  Its claws are as long as my hand, and its face is lionlike.  The recorded anecdote glorifies innovation (the chant invented by the cheerleaders) and unified school support of an exceptional individual, especially in competition with rival schools.
