“An aging farmer worth a surprising fortune almost kicked out of a ceremony that was designed to honor him.”
Van Wormer Hall was the University of Cincinnati’s first Library. It is among some of the oldest buildings on the campus, built in the year 1899. Today its centerpiece, a 30-foot glass dome, is lit with multiple LCD lights that make the dome glow in a variety of colors. During daytime hours, a vast majority of the building is illuminated by it.
Van Wormer Hall originally built in 1899, served as the University of Cincinnati’s first Library. Later it reopened to serve as office to the Senior Vice President and additional offices in 2006. Its creation was due to the contributions of one Asa Van Wormer. Wormers donation of 1,000 shares in stocks of the Cincinnati Railway couldn’t cover the furnishings of the Library in addition to the building, but he still assisted in the remainder of the cost. This was a gift in the memory of his Wife Julia, who died the prior year.
This is Asa Van Wormer, whom upon contacting the university of Cincinnati trustees, gifted an approximate value of fifty thousand dollars in order for the Library to be constructed. https://canopy.uc.edu/default/west_campus/stop/stop_14
