The Bridge Between the Past and the Present

Built after the end of the Civil War, the Newport Southbank Bridge, also called the Purple People Bridge, opened in April 1 of 1872.  “It was the first railroad bridge spanning the Ohio River between Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky.” (PurplePeopleBridge.com).  This beautiful walkway that overlooks the skyline was once used to carry heavy modern equipment and now is a beautiful walkway for people in Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky.

It fascinates me how something that people see everyday and use everyday has so much background.  Today, we spend our time walking on this bridge that overlooks the Ohio River however back in the 1870’s, this bridge had a very specific job – to get materials from one end to the other.  I encourage people to get knowledge on the things they interact with or see everyday.  You will be shocked to know the amount of history behind it!
