The First Recipient of the Medal of Honor

The Medal of Honor, the most prestigious of awards one can win in the Military, was first awarded in 1863. A man by the name of Jacob Parrott became immortalized in US history by becoming the first to receive this Medal of Honor, for his bravery in the Great Locomotive Chase.

Born in Fairfield, Ohio, he now rests in my hometown, Kenton, OH, home to a slowly rising population of 8,000. Having a cemetery memorial, a museum and highway named after him, and his name plastered everywhere in Kenton, Parrott is an inspiration to the small town folk of Kenton that maybe one day, we too can amass to such an impressive and nationally recognized feat.

Here is more information on Jacob Parrott, his history, and the Great Locomotive Chase.
