Caterpillar Plague Begone!

Situated just in front of Cascade Lake in Spring Grove Cemetery, this monument honors Andrew Erkenbrecher, best known as the founder of the Cincinnati Zoo. He also owned two factories, a starch factory and a grain mill. To me, the most interesting thing about this man was that he imported sparrows and successfully beat a caterpillar plague that was ravaging our great city. Why has no one told me that we were once plagued by caterpillars?! Nevertheless, this bird collection prompted good ol’ Andy Erkenbrecher to open a zoo in 1875 and it has been expanding ever since.
